New Bar Alert: The Magnolia Room is Tour's Tiny secret
You may have heard the name ‘Magnolia Room’ being tossed around recently. The bar inside a bar has had a ton of word-of-mouth hype lately; we stopped by to see why.
What is it: The Magnolia Room is a new speakeasy-style bar located inside Tour on Changle Lu. A fake wall slides open and a staircase leads you down into it.
Same owners and bartenders as Tour?: Yes, Mack and the rest of the Tour crew alternate back and forth throughout the night.
Why did they all of a sudden open a bar inside their bar? Tour has owned this smaller basement space the whole time, but when they first opened up it was flooded and unusable. They’ve spent the past year fixing it up and it’s finally ready to rock.
Tour, which opened in 2016 and houses the Magnolia Room downstairs
What’s it like? It’s awesome. The space is very dark, with leather couches, jazzy vibes, a glowing bar and old-timey blues music (which is the only thing they’ll be playing, and we’re totally cool with that).
Why’d they name it ‘Magnolia Room?’ The Magnolia Room got its name from two sources: Shanghai’s official city flower, and New Orleans’s legendary Magnolia housing projects.
New Orleans is famous for their vibrant Jazz and Blues culture. The Magnolia Room draws a lot of its inspiration (including its name) from this
What do they have? Just like Tour, all menu cocktails come with a small complimentary food or snack item, meant to enhance the drink. The drinks are well thought-out cocktails, there’s even a drink called the 12th ward RMB 85-95
Gambling Grasshopper: vodka. creme de cacao, creme de mentge, milk. Served with a Mahjong white chocolate, RMB 95
Can you eat the menu here too? You could try but we don’t recommend it. Their menu is far from boring though. It’s done in the style of a classy scratch lotto ticket, with 8 scratch spots (one per drink), and you can win prizes based on many little martini symbols you find.
Should I go? Yes, go now.
